Our Hiring Process
- Stage 1
Recruiter review
One of our ClientEarth Recruiters will carry out an initial review of your application. At this stage we are looking for key indicators of alignment with the advertised person specification. When this review is complete, we share the most aligned candidates with the hiring team for further review.
- Stage 2
Application questions
If you pass our initial Recruiter screening, we will share 2-3 additional role-specific questions with you. These will be similar to interview questions and will focus on a few of the technical aspects of the role, as well as exploring your motivations for applying for the role and joining ClientEarth. Your answers to these questions will be assessed by our review panel.
- Stage 3
Hiring Team Review
If you reach this stage, one or several members of the hiring team will review your application in more detail. They will be assessing your application to see how closely it matches the advertised person specification. We record our scores, and candidates who received the highest scores will progress to our interview stages.
- Stage 4
Online Interview
Generally our first round interviews will be online via Microsoft Teams. We recommend reading these articles by WikiJob and Indeed on how to prepare for an online interview.
You will be speaking with a number of members of the hiring team, in a panel interview format. If you have not taken part in a panel interview before, we recommend you research how these work. These articles on Monster, Total Jobs, Indeed and The Guardian are all useful.
The panel will be asking you specific questions to explore how your qualifications, experience and/or skills match the person specification. Make sure you revisit the job description ahead of the interview and prepare some examples that address the criteria in the person specification.

We also strongly recommend that you research competency-based interviews ahead of your interview and prepare some sample answers using the STAR technique.
- Stage 5
Interview
Generally our second round interviews will be in-person in one of our offices.
Second round interviews will run in a similar format to your first round interview, but you will be meeting additional members of the hiring team and will be asked different questions. You will also get to see the office you will be working in if selected and meet a few of the colleagues you could be working with.

- Stage 6
Offer
You’ve made it through our recruitment process, and we would like to offer you the job, congratulations! Your Recruiter will give you a call to share the good news with you, and to start discussions on your salary and potential start date. We will then follow up with a formal written conditional offer letter confirming all of the details.
- Stage 7
Pre-employment checks
Should you accept our job offer we will commence your pre-employment checks.
The conditions of your job offer will vary with each job but will always include a check to make sure you have the right to work in the country where you are going to be based. We will also always need to obtain satisfactory references that cover the last 3 years, including from your current or most recent employer. We also ask all new joiners to complete a Conflict of Interest declaration.
- Stage 8
Sharing your employment contract
Once all of your checks have come back as satisfactory we will then issue you with your employment contract and confirm further details for your first day with us.
